In 2010, model Kristen McMenamy took Silver locks to a new level. After walking in Calvin Klein's autumn/winter show, she single-handedly drew gasps from the crowd and broke a big taboo, making it cool to be young & grey. The 46 year-old model's hair is actually naturally grey, but at the height of her fame in the 90s she dyed it to be like her contemporaries, but she was never a conformist- sporting shaved eyebrows and a crop, which was unusual then.

She took the brave decision to stop resorting to dye almost a decade ago, telling Vogue, “You’ve got to keep moving forward, you can get older and still be rock-’n’-roll. I thought all that grey hair would make a beautiful picture.” Either way, it made just as big an impact on the fashion world, seeing her on the covers of both Vogue and Dazed & Confused just a few months after her silver-haired debut on the catwalk. Even 14 year-old superblogger, Tavi experimented with the look (although I think this is too grey and prefer a whiter shade like Lady Gaga's look, below).

It seems ageing brought the confidence McMenamy needed to say, 'enough is enough' and to let her natural colour loose. Whatever it was, it's definitely rubbed off on everyone else, because now lighter shades of pale are the shade du jour.Lavender shades are especially cool at the moment. Check out Stylist Katie Shillingford's current 'do:
I am also particularly fond of a peach blonde. These pastel shades that are now appearing since the silver look hit off certainly beat the Rihanna Cherry Red that sprung up after her latest album hit the shelves. The dying craze has also been helped on by cool London salons that specialise in creative colour, the best one being BLEACH who kicked off the 'ice-cream' colour that made waves last summer. They also did Miss Shillingford's wedding hair (above). Have a gander at some of their awesome looks here
There is something other-worldly about a girl with weird coloured hair, I'm not talking green or electric blue, it's more about a blue rinse look, just a hint of grunge. It's mysterious, feminine and a great way to stand out from the crowd. It makes you think the owner may possess magical or spiritual qualities, even a hint of a nonhuman background. She is quite simply out of this world.
The look also works on dark hair click here to see what I mean
But beware, these looks are hard to go for it if you are planning on going to an interview (that's not a hairdresser job) and getting it anytime soon!
